All Gemstones are Semi-precious or Precious. Most of the gemstones were added to the collection in the 1960’s to 1980’s and may very well be older than that - evidenced in the workmanship.

Rare Red Coral Earrings

These are polished natural pieces of red coral from Torre Del Greco, Italy were harvested decades ago before the Italian red coral became endangered. These are Corallium, excellent quality and this is why they can be highly polished. They have small black spots which are actually tiny holes and also have a great number of characteristic parallel, longitudinal, and very often sinuous striae, stretching from one end to the other of the axis. The way these were "cut" it is easy to see this distinctive wood grain texture which identifies this natural red coral as the real thing. Because of the rarity of real red coral earrings of the the thin smaller and much more fragile "branchy" type (which is about all that is left) can be had on amazon for $98. Red coral of this quality is sold by dealers for $50 - but the artist does not have the dealer's costs and they have been sitting in a wooden trunk for decades so this particular pair is being offered at a very reasonable price.
Red Coral in ancient Rome was not only considered very desirable but also was a natural protective amulet against evil. This was often worn around the neck to protect the wearer and also bring good fortune. Pliny the Elder recommended that a piece of red coral be hung over a newborn's cradle to protect him or her.
